According to reports, several hospitals throughout Southern California are being cited and fined for putting patients at risk.
Among the hospitals under fire are Harbor at UCLA, Pomona Valley Medical Center, and St. Joseph Hospital of Orange.
New Law Provokes Fines
The fines against these hospitals and medical centers reportedly mark the third time the California Department of Public Health has disciplined hospitals since a state law went into effect in 2007.
The new law gave the agency the ability to fine any facility they found were putting patients in jeopardy.
The agency has reportedly issued 39 citations in the area since October.
Patients Put at Risk
The citations and fines come in light of the several doctor and hospital errors that have occurred in recent months.
Among these errors are reports of a car crash victim dying dye a nurse’s failure to properly monitor the patient and a surgery performed by a resident leading to severe and life-changing injuries to the patient.
“The problems of medical errors in the medical system have been well documented, but progress has been painfully slow,” explains Glenn Melnick, a health economist.
