A San Francisco jury recently awarded $20 million in damages to a woman, who was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2006, and her husband.
Joan and Daniel Mahoney sued asbestos manufacturer Georgia Pacific Corp. after she received the mesothelioma diagnosis. At the time of the diagnosis, she was given nine months to live.
The Mahoneys started a part-time remodeling business in the late 1960s, during which time they were exposed to asbestos in numerous products, including an asbestos compound made by Georgia Pacific.
The Lawsuit
According to the lawsuit, Georgia Pacific continued making the asbestos compound used for filling cracks in sheetrock even after the company learned of its dangers and other companies began using substitutes.
Georgia Pacific was the only defendant in the trial and was ordered to pay 30 percent of the verdict — $7 million.
“I’m happy that in the last part of my life, I’ve been able to make a difference in the corporate conduct of Georgia Pacific,” Joan Mahoney was quoted as saying by her lawyer.
The rest of the award will remain unpaid, but the couple had previously reached out-of-court settlements with other companies.
