OTC, prescription or herbal supplements can cause secondary hypertension

The August 2004 issue of Mayo Clinic Health Letter discusses secondary hypertension, a less common high blood pressure that can occur and leave suddenly. People are surprised after years of following healthy diets, exercise and relaxation techniques when learning a sudden jump of blood pressure is present.

Sometimes caused by over-the-counter drugs, prescription medications and herbal supplements, secondary hypertension has been associated to products containing pseudoephedrine, which can aggravate blood pressure. Sibutramine, or Meridia, can elevate blood pressure and if stress, alcohol, tobacco or caffeine is present, this can only further aggravate levels. It is important to control both essential and secondary hypertension to reduce risks of stroke.
