Sears, Roebuck & Co. is facing a consumer fraud lawsuit claiming that one of its websites compromised private customer information. The suit seeks class-action status and millions in damages.
According to the complaint, the retailer’s Manage My Home website allows users to obtain sensitive consumer data—including names, street addresses, and social security numbers—which can be used to commit fraud.
“There’s so many scary situations where people could easily trick you into getting more personal information or gain access to your home for improper purposes,” said attorney Jay Edelson, a partner at the firm that filed the complaint.
The lawsuit, which was filed in Illinois, accuses Sears of violating a ban on “unfair or deceptive” practices under the state’s Consumer Fraud Act.
In a statement, Sears said it had disabled the function that allowed users to view customer’s purchase history.
