A recent study has shown that five new antipsychotic drugs used often in schizophrenics and other mentally ill patients have not been proven to be a more effective treatment than an older, less expensive drug. The study underlies criticism by consumer rights groups over the FDA’s drug approval process.
The new drugs, including Zyprexa, Risperdal, Seroquel and Geodon were all marketed as not having side effects. The drugs control about 90 percent of the schizophrenic market and account for some $10 billion a year in sales in the US. All of the drugs won FDA approval after very short studies. None of the drugs were studied in conjunction with one another.
The new study shows that an older and much less expensive drug, perphenazine, is as effective and safe as the newer drugs, contrary to what has been heavily touted by the drug industry.
