In March 2000, Rezulin was abruptly recalled from the market. The FDA''s action surprised the doctors across the country that had been using the popular diabetes drug Rezulin. Frantically, doctors sifted through patient files in hopes of quickly locating those patients that might be at risk for suffering the severe liver toxicity and irreversible liver failure that had been found to occur amongst Rezulin patients.
Turns out, the saving grace in the future may lie in the use of computers. For the doctors that had installed computer systems into their offices, pulling up a search of all patients affected by the Rezulin recall took just minutes. With the growing number of drugs being fast tracked through the FDA for approval, many have criticized the power rich, large pharmaceutical companies have over the approval process for sacrificing patient safety. The drug recalls that have occurred over the years have included life-threatening side effects that computers may help reduce.
