After several high-profile blunders, Marsha J. Evans, the President of the American Red Cross has suddenly resigned, leading many to speculate that the beleaguered organization is in more trouble than previously thought. The Red Cross was the primary, though private, agency that is responsible for dealing with disasters on the federal level. The agency was widely criticized for its response in providing aid to victims of the recent Hurricane Katrina disaster.
Several lawsuits are currently being filed and considered over the treatment of the disaster victims in that incident.
The Red Cross issued a statement saying that Evans'' departure was due to conflicts with the Red Cross board of directors rather than any performance related deficiency. US officials have long called for Red Cross restructuring and many in the government are openly wondering if the organization should be the main disaster relief agency in the country. The Red Cross is set up to respond to such natural disasters as tornados, hurricanes, and floods, but also handles terrorist attacks and other catastrophic events.
Evans is the third president to resign since 1991.
