Two separate real estate agencies, Patricia Forgione''s Realty Network Inc. in Eastchester, NY, and Green Tree Realty and Relocation Company Inc. in White Plains, NY, were monitored by a Westchester county government agency after complaints about racial discrimination. The complaints alleged that the agencies offered white apartment renters rental units at a much higher frequency than they did to African-Americans.
The three-year investigation uncovered serious racial discrimination in renting apartments. The agencies consistently denied African-Americans leases or apartments. Many of the potential renters were advised to look for apartments in other neighborhoods.
The agencies settled and will pay monetary damages and undergo training that focuses on racial awareness. The program will require the business to maintain records showing they are complying with the law. The settlement also places the real estate companies on probation for three years.
