Bausch & Lomb Inc. decided to permanently remove its ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution from the market as the number of confirmed cases of serious eye infection continues to rise.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Friday that the number of fungal eye infections linked to the product has risen to 122.
Fusarium keratitis is a rare and painful eye infection that can lead to impaired vision and potentially blindness.
Last month, Bausch & Lomb suspended sales of MoistureLoc after the CDC began investigating an outbreak of the Fusarium infection. A number of people infected with the fungus reported using the company''s contact lens solution.
Studies are still being conducted to determine why the contact lens solution may cause the infection.
The company is currently involved in several product liability lawsuits over the suspect product.
