Three former prisoners, James Worthington, Garrett Gardner and Heather Phillips, are filing a lawsuit seeking $3 million for inhumane living conditions at the Jail where they were detained. The jail, Brown County Jail in Georgetown, OH is alleged to be the place of routine and unwarranted beatings by prison guards. Even though prisoners are incarcerated, they still have rights under the US constitution, the lawsuit argues.
While in jail the prisoners also allege that they were often denied basic services such as medical and dental care. Every prisoner under Ohio and federal law has access to medical care. The lawsuit also alleges that visiting family members and others were regularly turned away even though they had followed procedures and only came to the jail during regular visiting hours.
The suit seeks to improve the living conditions at the jail in order to help the jail conform to federal regulations regarding prisoners’ rights.
The lawsuit also alleges that hundreds of prisoners suffered from similar treatment. The jail is located about 40 miles from Cincinnati. The lawsuit names three county commissioners, seven deputies, and Sheriff Dwayne Wenninger as defendants in the case.
