A Compton man suspected of car theft and beaten by a law enforcement official after leading them in a car chase, will receive a $450,000 settlement from the city of Los Angeles, according to his attorney.
In June 2004, Stanley Miller, 39, was struck 11 times with a metal flashlight by a Los Angeles police officer. The entire beating occurred after a 21-mile, high-speed car chase, and was videotaped by a television crew in a helicopter.
The assault on Miller, which has drawn much comparison to the high profile Rodney King beatings, entitled him to receive monetary compensation for his damages. The $450,000 settlement amount was reached through mediation and must still be approved by the Los Angeles City Council.
“I think it''s a good, solid settlement in light of what occurred,” said Brown Greene, Miller''s attorney. “The city stepped up to the plate.”
William J. Bratton, chief of the LAPD, has fired the officer involved in the assault in 2005. A Board of Rights committee also found the officer guilty of using unnecessary force.
The law enforcement department has announced they will ban the use of heavy, metal flashlights—the weapon used in the beating.
