A Florida police officer was arrested Oct. 28 on a charge of fleeing the scene of an accident and on DUI charges. According to reports, Officer Christopher John Sutherlin was speeding down a Florida highway when he slammed his truck into the back of another vehicle. After allegedly crashing into the vehicle, Sutherlin kept driving, but eventually had to stop because of damages to his truck.
According to reports, Joshua D. Vitori, 26, the driver of the other vehicle, followed Sutherlin after he fled the scene. Officers eventually caught up with Sutherlin and reported that he smelled of alcohol.
Sutherlin had two passengers in his car at the time of the accident, one of which is also a police officer. Both passengers and Vitori were taken to the local hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.
According to the arresting officers, they took Sutherlin to the Hernando County Jail where he his interview was videotaped. Reports also show that when he blew into a breathalyzer at the station, he was two times over the legal limit.
The officer was taken to jail and was held on a $6,000 bail. He was booked on a DUI charge, two counts of DUI personal injury and DUI property damage.
The police chief said he is still deciding whether he will be put on administrative leave without pay or if he will be fired. They are still waiting to see what the exact charges are, he said.
