Children under the age of two should not use Phenergan (Promethazine HCL) because of the potential for fatal respiratory problems, according to the FDA warning. Phenergan is an antihistamine used to control nausea and post-operative pain as well as to treat allergic symptoms and reaction.
A warning label has been added to the drug to reflect the heightened risk for respiratory depression and death in pediatric patients two years of age and younger. The FDA urges that caution be exercised when administering this drug to pediatric patients older than two years of age as well.
The warning applies to all forms of the drug, including syrups, suppositories, tablets, or injectables.
