Two men filed personal injury lawsuits against Pfizer, alleging that the pharmaceutical giant concealed serious health risks associated with its popular cholesterol drug Lipitor.
The lawsuits accuse Pfizer of promoting Lipitor as a safe drug with minimal health risks while failing to disclose the real dangers of the drug to patients and the medical community.
Charles Wilson and Michael Mazzariello filed their suits separately but each charged that Lipitor caused irreparable nerve damage, memory loss, and bouts of fatigue.
Wilson, a 60-year-old former insurance agent, claimed that he was forced to leave his job as a result of the side effects caused by Lipitor. Three years after terminating use of the drug, Wilson continues to suffer from loss of balance, fatigue, and burning sensations in his hands and feet.
Mazzariello, a 47-year-old criminal law attorney who took the drug for two months, has suffered debilitating nerve and muscle injury. He has endured repeated hospitalizations and now walks with a cane.
Several months ago, Pfizer was charged with engaging in fraudulent marketing practices. Union and employee insurance plans filed a lawsuit accusing the company of promoting Lipitor for off-label uses not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Pfizer is also currently the target of a pending class action lawsuit for its marketing of Lipitor to women.
