Claims that the Pennsylvania Medical Society and Pennsylvania physicians have been making that increases in patient lawsuits and skyrocketing jury awards have caused the "crisis" state in Pennsylvania medical malpractice insurance rates is false, according to Public Citizen consumer group. The lack of evidence supporting these claims as a means of justifying authorizing limits on pain and suffering damages has been shown by data from government sources.
Numbers signify that in recent years the annual number of Pennsylvania medical malpractice awards declined, the number of awards per doctor declines, the number of higher end cases and $1 million-plus jury verdicts declined, and the number of doctors in Pennsylvania increased at nearly twice the rate of the overall increase in state population. The consumer group released a 51-page report on "The Facts About Medical Malpractice in Pennsylvania" and thinks that "Pennsylvania residents need to look beyond the scare tactics of the American Medical Association and the Pennsylvania Medical Society and demand solutions that will improve the quality of medical care."
