Pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline PLC is facing two new lawsuits that allege their popular antidepressant drug, Paxil, causes serious birth defects including heart abnormalities and deaths when used during pregnancy.
According to the lawsuits—filed by two Ohio families—the use of Paxil during pregnancy has led to severe heart defects in their babies, which has seriously injured two of the children and killed three.
Dangers of Paxil
The two new Paxil product liability lawsuits are among many others that claim the manufacturer failed to adequately warn doctors and patients of the severe dangers linked to use of the drug—particularly during the first trimester of pregnancy.
According to plaintiff attorney Karen Barth Menzies, the reports of the risks associated with Paxil were far overdue for many pregnant women who continued to take the drug while pregnant.
“It''s not only that they [GlaxoSmithKline] waited too long, it''s that the warning itself wasn''t adequate,” she said. “There are so many mothers and physicians out there who still don''t know.”
Lawsuit Claims
One of the latest Paxil lawsuits filed on behalf of the Mobley family claims that the twin girls born to Chasity Mobley suffered heart defects as a direct result of their mother''s use of Paxil.
After undergoing several surgeries to correct congenital heart complications, one twin died when she was just over a year old and the other—who suffers from a ventricular septal defect (hole in the heart)—will need lifelong medical care and treatment.
Another family whose toddler son died from heart defects alleged to be caused by maternal Paxil use, also filed a lawsuit against the drug maker accusing them of negligence and wrongdoing.
The lawsuits are seeking unspecified economic and non-economic damages.
