"Home Paternity Tests Now Available to Most of Country"

Rite Aid Corporation is now selling DNA paternity kits in over 4,000 stores in 30 states after sales in Oregon, Washington and California last year proved a success.

“Everyone is purchasing the tests because they’re curious. They’re looking to establish questions about their own child or their own paternity,” said Douglas Fogg of Identigene, the brand under which the paternity test kits are sold.

Accuracy & Legal Concerns

The kit can be purchased for between $17.99 and $29.99, but the total cost is about $150 after the laboratory processing fee. The results are 98 to 99 percent accurate and are usually available within three to five business days.

Despite the level of accuracy, experts warn consumers that the results are not likely to stand up in court.

“The jury’s still very much out on these tests in terms of reliability and establishing a chain of custody,” said attorney Susan Crockin, who specializes in reproductive technology.
