A recent study shows that patients who use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which include over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen and naproxen, face an increased risk of hospitalization for heart failure.
Dr. Consuelo Huerta and his team of researchers in Madrid compared NSAID use among individuals between 60 and 84 years old with a random sample of subjects.
They found that the overall risk of a first hospitalization for heart failure increased by 30 percent in the patients taking NSAIDs. Individual NSAIDs like diclofenac and indomethacin increased the risk anywhere from 10 percent to threefold.
The study further showed that individuals with a prior diagnosis of heart failure stood a sevenfold risk of first hospitalization for heart failure.
The findings of this study coincide with other published studies indicating that NSAIDs exacerbate heart failure symptoms, particularly in patients with a previous history of heart failure or cardiovascular disease.
This study, however, adds the finding that NSAIDs increase the risk of hospitalization for heart failure in patients without a prior history.
The researchers conclude that the increased risk may have a “considerable public health impact,” especially among those most vulnerable to heart failure – the elderly.
