Corporate Airlines Flight 5966, an affiliate of American Airlines, was on a regular route from St. Louis to Kirksville, Mo. when it crashed just short of the airport, killing at least eight people aboard. Just two known survivors with only broken bones were left in the wreckage scattered over an area about one mile across.
Thirteen passengers and two pilots were aboard when the plane clipped treetops and crashed into wood just after 7:50 p.m. Tuesday. Last communication from the plane indicated a normal approach and no mention of any problems.
Emergency crews searched the wood early Wednesday for possible survivors. The National Transportation Safety Board investigators arrived Wednesday morning to recover both the plane''s flight data recorders. The fact that any survivors were left with just minor injuries was considered miraculous. The cause of the crash is not yet known.
The CEO of Corporate Airlines said the plane crash was the airline''s first fatal accident.
