According to a study among smokers in Norway who took over-the-counter drugs like Advil, Motrin and Aleve for at least six months, they had twice the risk of dying of a heart attack, stroke or other heart-related problem.
The study was trying to determine if the pain relievers could prevent oral cancer. Though the drugs did reduce the risk of developing oral cancer in half, the deaths prevented were offset by the increased risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, according to the study.
Following the Vioxx and Bextra recall, the latest study adds questions about the cardiovascular risks beyond COX-2 drugs. Vioxx, Bextra and Celebrex belong to the family of drugs called COX-2 inhibitors and have been linked to increased heart attack and stroke risks. The results from the Norway study indicate heart risk may extend beyond COX-2 drugs to the larger family of medications known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs.
NSAID drugs include naproxen, ibuprofen and most all other over-the-counter pain relievers except acetaminophen or Tylenol. The Norway study is considered only preliminary evidence that requires more information.
