Over 40 women in San Francisco filed lawsuits against the manufacturers of Ortho Evra alleging the birth control patch caused them to suffer severe illnesses and even death.
According to one lawsuit, 43 women developed life-threatening blood clots and other serious ailments after using Ortho Evra, which is quickly becoming one of the most popular methods of contraception in the United States.
Another claim alleges that one patch user, 25-year-old Kelly Bracken, suffered from fatal blood clots in her legs and lungs after wearing the contraceptive.
Women Not Warned of Patch Dangers
The product liability lawsuits filed in San Francisco seeks unspecified damages for the losses and suffering the women endured as a result of using the birth control patch.
Ortho Evra maker, Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical Co., and McKesson Corp., San Francisco distributor of the patch are named defendants in the lawsuit.
The suits allege that Ortho-McNeil failed to adequately test the safety of their product and misled the public about the seriousness of the potential adverse events of the patch including severe blood clots, heart attack, stroke, and death.
“This product should not be on the market,” said plaintiff attorney Shawn Khorrami. “When you put out a product that gives women more hormones than they need, then you''re increasing their risk of developing those ailments.”
More than 400 lawsuits have been filed against Ortho-McNeil nationwide.
