Another Ortho Evra lawsuit has been filed, this time on behalf of a 26-year-old woman who died from a pulmonary embolism caused by the dangerous and defective birth control patch. This patient had been using Ortho Evra for eight months before she became fatally ill. Dozens of women have tragically died due to the serious side effects of the Ortho Evra patch.
In 2003, the otherwise young and healthy woman suffered respiratory complications and collapsed in her home. When first responders arrived, she was in acute respiratory stress. By the time she made it to the Michigan hospital, her condition was progressing and she was turning blue. Tragically, the patient did not respond to life-saving efforts and she died that day. Doctors confirmed her death was due to an acute pulmonary embolism.
A pulmonary embolism is a block in the artery of the lung, often by a blood clot that has broken off and traveled to the lungs from a deep vein in the legs or pelvis. While not always fatal, pulmonary embolism is a serious medical emergency often requiring long term use of anti-clotting drugs and/or surgical treatment. Symptoms of pulmonary embolism can include:
Trouble breathing
Chest pain
Fainting
Shortness of breath
Anxiety
Convulsions
Ortho Evra has been strongly linked to a significantly increased risk of blood clots, pulmonary embolism and other thrombotic events. Ortho Evra was first approved in November 2001, after which its makers Ortho McNeil aggressively marketed the patch as a safe and convenient method of hormonal birth control. What the drug maker neglected to communicate to consumers was how dangerous this medication could be.
In November 2005, three years after Ortho Evra''s approval, its maker announced that the patch delivers 60 percent more estrogen than oral contraceptives. Higher doses of estrogen pose a high risk of blood clots and related complications. The level of estrogen administered by Ortho Evra can exceed an amount the FDA has previously deemed illegal, due to the unacceptable risk of blood clots.
Despite this outrageous level of risk, Ortho Evra remains on the market. The recent Ortho Evra lawsuit alleges that Ortho McNeil knew of the serious risks posed by their product but failed to inform consumers. Pre-marketing trials show that subjects using Ortho Evra were SIX times more likely to develop embolisms or other thrombotic injuries, compared to subjects using oral contraceptives. Yet somehow, this drug was approved for use, putting millions of women at risk for death or serious injury and loss.
