Several settlements have recently been reached in cases involving an Oklahoma County jail where there have been several reports of abuse and even deaths during childbirth.
The lawsuits claim the jail isn’t offering adequate medical care to inmates, and as a result thier newborn children are wrongfully dying and prisoners are suffering.
According to reports, allegations of death, abuse and neglect at the Oklahoma County jail has cost taxpayers more than $2.5 million in legal settlements.
Among the cases brought to trial has been one involving an inmate whose baby boy died shortly after she gave birth to him in the jail.
The woman reportedly received $385,000 after filing a suit for inadequate healthcare.
Although reports of abuse and wrongful deaths have been common at the Oklahoma City jail for years, many say these cases are covered up and kept hidden from the public.
“It’s inadvertently covered up by these out-of-court settlements, so the public doesn’t know,” says former Oklahoma County Commissioner Stan Inman.
Other reports of abuse have also cost state taxpayers, such as the case where an inmate was nearly beaten to death for apparently no reason.
