"Mother of Two had Acute Blockage"
The maker of NuvaRing is being sued by the widower of a 32-year-old woman who died after developing a fatal blood clot while using the popular contraceptive.
Untimely Death
Jackie Kelly Bozicev, a young mother of two, collapsed in her home on December 7, 2007. Doctors at a local hospital gave her a clot-busting drug and tried to resuscitate her, but to no avail.
According to her autopsy, Bozicev had developed a blood clot that lodged in her lungs and caused acute blockage. She had been using NuvaRing for about six months, and her husband, Robert, said she was healthy.
“A formation of a clot like this is really uncommon in a woman of her age,” said attorney Carmen Scott.
The Lawsuit
The lawsuit claims that the maker of NuvaRing failed to properly warn about the risk of blood clots and is seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages from Organon BioSciences NV and Schering-Plough Corp.
NuvaRing has been on the market since 2002 and is inserted vaginally. It contains a form of progestin that has been linked to a twofold risk of blood clots.
