According to an Oklahoma based disability and elder rights advocacy group, 39 registered se x offenders live in Ohio nursing homes. Employee background checks have been mandated by Ohio since 1998, but evidence shows not all checks will weed out sexual abuse predators.
An Ohio nursing home, ManorCare Nursing of Belden Village, e mployed a worker who had already been fired from several area health care centers and nursing homes before being charged in October 2003 with four felonies concerning improper activity involving two male patients at the home. Convicted of rape, patient abuse and two counts of gross sexual imposition in March 2004 and given a three-year prison sentence, ManorCare said it had performed a background check but the previous nursing home abuse allegations were not revealed until after the criminal case.
There are ways for concerned family members to more adequately investigate a nursing home to prevent potential sexual abuse case s from arising. The Ohio Department of Health''s investigations of nursing homes are posted in the state''s Long-Term Care Consumer Guide and details of allegations against a nursing home, as well as the results of the investigation, can be found online. R eports of nursing home abuse can also be found in daily police and sheriff''s deputies'' reports in The Repository.
