The program director for the Nursing Home Ombudsman Agency of the Bluegrass said that about one in every 100 complaints received involves sexual abuse. Representing more than 5,000 residents of Kentucky nursing homes in 17 counties, this number may be just a fraction of the actual victims. Since nursing home residents may be less likely to report sexual abuse events for fear of the problem escalating or being evicted from the nursing home, more focus has been made on preventing the sexual abuse occurrences from happening and identifying better training to do so.
The nursing home sexual abuse cases include any unwarranted contact, including probing medical procedures that are not necessary. Staff members trained to identify and respond to possible sexual assaults in Kentucky nursing homes and nationally may become a standard routine in the future. Until then, it is important for all nursing home sexual abuse reports to be taken seriously whenever they are made.
