By 2030, baby boomers will become the retiree majority. With the nursing home abuse problems occurring today, the future has a lot of uncertainties about their long-term care. The crisis that is expected to come will be interesting because baby boomers are thought to not accept nursing home abuse because they are a more demanding and educated group that will want to make more choices for themselves.
The rate the U.S. is aging is increasing and between now and 2030 the number of over 65 year old will double to over 70 million. The 70 million Americans will account for over 21 percent of the population, up from the 12 percent that over 65 year olds now consist of. More Americans are living a longer, healthier life, and some people are encouraged by this factor.
Right now, just six to nine percent of the population resides in a nursing home but problems lie in the fact that no one knows or can predict which part of the population that includes. In terms of financial aspects, there is currently $100,000 in savings according to some estimates for retirement, but this is just an average meaning some people might not have any savings while others have millions in savings. The severity of nursing home abuse that has been occurring on a widespread basis has become a great problematic challenge for public policy.
