The parents of two young girls that were devastatingly killed in a gas explosion in Massachusetts have come to a settlement with NStar Gas. Co. and other defendants for $17.2 million. The wrongful death case has gone on for nearly four years now after the death of four and five year old Iris and Violet Carey.
The Carey''s were asleep in their home in the early morning of July 24, 2002, when a violent explosion took place at the nearby gas company, taking the lives of the two children and leaving the parents with minor injuries. The couple sued NStar Gas, Inner-Tite Corp. and the landlords of their home for wrongful death on behalf of their deceased children.
In a statement to the Boston Globe, Tara Carey commented, “It''s been almost four years, and we need to come to some kind of closure”, in regards to the settlement. The couple alleged that the companies and landlord were guilty of negligence and further investigation suggested that the gas company may also have been in violation of federal pipeline safety regulations, which is where the explosion occurred.
The settlement was divided between the three defendant parties; NStar paying $12.5 million, Inner-Tite paying $4.5 million for the rusty pipes, and the landlord paying damages in the amount of $175,000. The primary defendant, NStar, maintains that the company was not at fault in the case of the explosion, but is eager to help the Carey''s bring closure to their family and move on with their lives.
The Carey''s now reside in Buzzard Bay, and have two children who have been born since the accident.
