"New Mexico Public Employee Reaches Sexual Harassment Settlement"
A former employee of the Public Regulation Commission in New Mexico was recently awarded $840,000 in damages in a sexual harassment lawsuit.
“I have never known what to expect,” said plaintiff Wyla Green, adding that she was happy it was over.
The Allegations
Green claimed that she was sexually harassed by her former mentor, David King, soon after she began working for him in April 2003. According to Green’s allegations, King made suggestive comments and touched her inappropriately despite her protests.
In November 2003, Green filed a grievance against King. Several months later in March, she was terminated over allegations of tardiness, improper use of her employee cell phone, and time sheet falsification.
Verdict Issued
She filed suit in state district court against King, the PRC, and several others. The jury found the defendants liable for Green’s damages and awarded her both compensatory and punitive damages.
King denied the allegations against him and his attorney said they may appeal the verdict.
