More than 60 members of the Mongol Motorcycle Club, a Southern California-based biker gang, were arrested on murder, torture and drug charges. While the members argue they are nothing more than a social club, authorities disagree, accusing them of regularly engaging in criminal violence.
The 177-page indictment alleges that the group members, most of which are Hispanic, have been involved in countless hate crimes against African Americans. The indictment also accuses members of the so-called social club of stealing motorcycles and credit card information and of committing various acts of robbery.
The members are being accused of swarming around motorists on a road near Palm Springs on their motorcycles. They allegedly, boxed the cars in while one of the members tried to stab the drivers with a knife.
The gang is also being accused of celebrating illegal acts such as murder. For example, the lawsuit claims that one of the members was given a tattoo of the Mongol’s insignia on his head after he shot two rival gang members.
The gang’s violent crimes were uncovered by four undercover agents that joined the gang and won the trust of its top members. According to reports, the four agents were given fake identities and had to carry out crimes and errands for the gang in order to be taken in as real members. All four members had to live away from their families and friends during their time as an undercover.
As part of the arrests, officials seized many of their Harleys. If they are found guilty, the gang will no longer be able to wear clothing that has their insignia on it.
