A recent report issued by the Institute of Medicine notes that military personnel who suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI) face a heightened risk of developing long-term health conditions.
Authors of the report examined the link between TBI and long-term problems, including:
The study found that military personnel, who suffer, even mild traumatic brain injuries, show symptoms of the conditions listed above. The authors also noted that the majority of military personnel who suffer from these long-term affects, were not hit directly in the head, but instead, sustained the injury by being exposed to an explosion.
Because of the findings, study authors called for further testing that will examine blast-induced neurotrauma (BINT), an injury that, according to medical officials, is often misdiagnosed.
According to the most recent studies, more than 5,500 military personnel have suffered traumatic brain injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan so far. Of these TBIs, the majority are blast-related.
The authors of the study were not able to produce solid evidence of a direct link between TBIs and blast-related injuries; however the study has opened the door to the possibility and has provided medical professionals with a possible link. Study authors have recommended that further testing be conducted to determine post-injury consequences.
The authors call for testing on blast-injuries and traumatic brain injuries.
The study was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
