"Meridia Still Available in the Absence of Safe, Effective Weight Loss Pills"
There are 120 million overweight or obese Americans, and this rate continues to escalate. Weight problems increase risk of cancers, diabetes, and heart disease, and over the past five years the number of Americans diagnosed with diabetes has increased 27%. Drug companies have been spending a lot of money researching and trying to develop the new "miracle" weight loss drug, however none of been successful as of yet.
Right now there are only two drugs approved for long-term weight loss, including Meridia. Meridia is supposed to work by controlling a person''s appetite because of the drug''s effect on brain chemistry. Unfortunately, Meridia has been associated to deadly side effects, including cardiovascular events leading to death.
Public Citizen consumer group has petitioned the FDA in March 2002 to issue a Meridia ban due to the continued reports of deadly effects. In September 2003, the consumer group renewed its FDA petition.
