A woman living in Saint Clair County, Illinois filed a lawsuit against Belleville Memorial hospital and five of its doctors claiming her infant daughter died because of their medical negligence.

Courtney Williams alleges her daughter died of cardiac arrest after the doctors failed to diagnosis her meningitis, Dec, 19, 2006. According to the lawsuit, had the doctors properly diagnosed William’s daughter, she would still be alive. The following four medical professionals have been named as defendants in the suit:

• Dr. Melody Santos
• Brian Franks
• Christopher Sallee
• Dr. Joseph

Lawsuit Alleges Medical Negligence Killed Patient

According to Williams the staff was negligent, because they:

• Failed to recognize the symptoms of meningitis
• Failed to perform the necessary evaluation
• Failed to provide proper care

Belleville Memorial Hospital has also been named a defendant in the case. According to the suit, the hospital was negligent, because it:

• Did not provide employees proper training
• Failed to implement policies and procedures that would ensure the doctors perform adequate medical assessments of their patients
• Failed to provide proper treatment to fight meningitis

Mother Seeks Compensation for her Losses

Williams is seeking sums in excess of $700,000 to cover compensation for her losses. The lawsuit argues that not only did William’s daughter suffer severe pain and suffering before her death, but that Williams, herself, suffered losses as a result of the medical negligence that led to the death of her daughter. Those losses include:

• Emotional pain and suffering
• Medical, funeral costs
• Loss of companionship of her daughter
