Maple Leaf Foods recently just announced the expansion of its recall of cold cuts after the meat was linked to four deaths and dozens of illnesses across the country.
Since the massive recall, shares of the company have fallen to their lowest level in seven years.
According to reports, stock of the company is down 10 percent and analysts are concerned about the future of Maple Leaf.
Health officials are also growing more concerned as reports of illnesses in consumers continue to come in.
Over the weekend, tests confirmed that the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria were found in the cold cuts made at Maple Leaf plant in Toronto.
This plant was also linked to the strain that killed four people and caused 21 cases of listerosis.
The incubation period for this illness, which can be fatal for the elderly and people with compromised immune systems implies that other cases are sure to be reported in the future.
Three of the victims were reportedly women and the fourth who died from the illness was a man from British Colombia.
“Damage control and financial minimization at a time like this has not even been considered,” explains Michael H. Vels, chief financial officer for Maple Leaf.
