Manute Bol, a former NBA player and humanitarian, recently passed away from kidney failure and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.
Bol, who was 47-years-old, was renowned for his 7"7' frame and tireless efforts to improve his native Sudan for his fellow countryman, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. One such charitable project that Bol started was Sudan Sunrise, which worked to end oppression in the African nation.
"Sudan and the world have lost a hero and an example for all of us," Tom Prichard, executive director of the group Sudan Sunrise, said in an e-mail obtained by the Associated Press. "Manute, we'll miss you. Our prayers and best wishes go out to all his family, and all who mourn his loss."
Bol was admitted to a Virginia hospital shortly after returning from a recent humanitarian trip. There he underwent three dialysis treatments and developed Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, which is a severe allergic reaction that causes the skin to blister and eventually fall off.
The massive man played 10 NBA seasons and although he averaged only 2.6 points per game, he was a strong presence on the defensive end, blocking 3.3 shots per contest.
