A new law was recently passed in Louisiana that could increase the financial commitment divorced parents will have to make to their kids.
The law was finally passed after lawmakers debated over about a dozen bills relating to the management of children after a divorce.
The Importance of Child Support
According to divorce experts, it’s common that lawmakers attempt to push for a number of changes to the laws regarding child support every other year.
“Child support has a very significant impact on people today,” explains Robbie Endris, the executive director for the Department of Social Services’ Support Services Division.
The bill that was just passed enables judges to add special expenses for camps, music lessons and sports into child-support responsibilities.
Judges Given More Power
Judges reportedly were already enabled to add support to parents for extra activities but were often reluctant to do so.
“We’re all trying to address those situations where they refuse to pay anything,” says state Rep. Joseph Lopinto.
Lopinto claims that some parents, such as professional athletes, only receive large incomes for a short amount of time and when they no longer have that income they drop their child support obligations.
