Some consider Wisconsin''s lemon law the toughest in the country. When the lemon law was written 20- years ago, a consumer would be rewarded automatic double damages for a "lemon" if he/she is forced to take a manufacturer to court and wins. For Vern Holschbach, who wrote the Wisconsin lemon law, this is the reason most of the cases end up being settled out of court.
Now, the lemon law that was intended to protect consumers from frustrating bouts with vehicles ending up in shops more than on the roads may end up being changed. The proposed bill includes several changes, including double damages should not be automatic and an addition that the car must actually be in a repair shop for 30 days instead of finding that a new car must just be out of service for 30 days within the first year of purchase as the lemon law currently states.
