Kaiser Permanente will pay $3.2 million to a teenage girl who suffered brain damage during her delivery at the HMO’s Anaheim hospital.
Untimely C-section
Ariana Ehtemam, 14, was delivered by way of C-section and now suffers from attention deficits, hearing loss, and behavioral problems as a result of oxygen deprivation during her birth.
According to court documents, the C-section was not performed in a timely manner and Ariana wasn’t breathing when she was born. Ariana was resuscitated but then had to spend several weeks in the hospital do to the birth injury.
Settlement Buys Lifetime Annuity
The settlement money will go toward the purchase of a $20 million lifetime annuity to help pay for rehabilitation and future medical costs as well as any residential supervision she may eventually require.
“She has to have a lot of accommodations,” said Frank Barbaro, the family’s attorney.
