A recently filed federal class-action lawsuit alleges that oil companies may have been responsible for much of the damage to the New Orleans area from Hurricane Katrina. The lawsuit, representing all victims of the hurricane in Louisiana, alleges that improper drilling and exploration by oil companies had eroded much of the natural barriers surrounding coastal Louisiana.
Defendants in the suit include such companies as Exxon Mobil Corp, Chevron, Shell Oil, BP, and other companies engaged in pipeline installing and oil exploration.
The suit alleges that years of drilling, exploration, and other activities has eroded and destroyed much of the coastal marshes around the New Orleans area. The lawsuit claims that miles of canals had been dredged in the gulf, creating deep pockets of water and unstable land conditions.
