Health Insurance provider Humana Inc. has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit filed against them by a number of doctors. The physicians said in the lawsuit that Humana paid lesser amounts of money in claims than they submitted for billing.
Humana will pay out some $40 million directly to physicians and possibly as much as $18 million in legal fees.
Humana has also posted a lower than expected earnings for the next business quarter due to the lawsuit.
The class-action lawsuit had some 700,000 physicians who joined in their collective grievances against healthcare providers. The original suit had 10 healthcare companies as defendants. Companies that were being sued and that have already settled include WellPoint Inc., Aetna Inc., and Cigna Corp. The case has been going on for the past six years.
Humana is one of the US’ biggest publicly traded health benefits companies. They operate and provide healthcare in 15 states and Puerto Rico.
