According to new research considered the most comprehensive study done on the impact of children and safety in hospitals, more than 4,000 children died in 2000 because of safety lapses. The children's deaths cost an additional $1 billion in hospital charges from longer stays and follow up care for the ill and injured. Of the 20 most common patient safety problems, including post-operative infections or bleeding to failure to revive a patient, researchers found that nearly all the problems resulted in considerably longer hospital stays.
Infections caused by medical care meant an additional month of medical care and an additional $30,000 to $140,000 in each case. The study revealed that the youngest and poorest children were found to be the most at risk. This research is the first to try to quantify patient safety incidents on just children.
