Hormone replacement therapy used to be a common treatment method for all women going through menopause. In July 2002, the views on hormone replacement therapy drastically changed when a US trial was ended after five years, three years early because of the serious concerns that had arisen. The study found that taking a combined hormone replacement therapy pill increased risk of breast cancer by 26%, heart attack by 29%, and stroke by 41%.
In addition, a British study was also stopped after finding the same results as the American hormone replacement therapy study. In August 2003, the Million Women study showed hormone replacement therapy can double breast cancer risk and may have been the cause for an extra 20,000 cases of breast cancer in Britain in the past decade. In January 2004, the Committee on Safety of Medicines concluded hormone replacement therapy should not be prescribed to prevent fractures.
