Twenty-three lots of heparin-containing blood thinner have been recalled by B. Braun Medical Inc. as a precautionary measure after the company’s supplier discovered possible contamination.
B. Braun’s supplier, Scientific Protein Laboratories, also supplied heparin to Baxter International Inc. Baxter has recently recalled all of its heparin supply sold in the United States.
Reports of Injury & Death
The recalls were prompted when U.S. health officials found a heparin-like contaminant in certain batches of Baxter’s heparin product. According to the Food and Drug Administration, contaminated heparin products have been linked to serious patient injuries and as many as 19 deaths.
Contamination of the heparin products occurred in China, where Scientific Protein Laboratories co-owns a manufacturing plant.
