The families of people who died from contaminated heparin injections testified before Congress last week, expressing anger and grief over manufacturing and regulatory safety failures.
“I watched my husband and my best friend slip away before my eyes,” Colleen Hubley told the Congressional committee on Tuesday. “I know that he would want me to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else.”
Dozens of Deaths
Hubley’s husband, Randy, died in January—a month after his mother died at the same clinic after receiving an injection of contaminated heparin. Eighty-one deaths have so far been linked to the Chinese manufactured blood thinner.
Heparin is widely used across the world to prevent blood clots in dialysis and heart surgery patients. Numerous recalls have been issued in recent months after reports of serious adverse effects, including death.
Intentional Contamination?
Officials discovered a contaminant known as oversulfated chondroitin sulfate (OSCS) in heparin distributed to 11 countries. According to FDA official Dr. Janet Woodcock, the contamination is thought to be “intentional, but this is not yet proven.”
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
