Three Japanese companies have issued a recall of the anti-clotting drug heparin as a precautionary measure, said the Food and Drug Administration on Monday.
Chinese-Sourced Heparin Contaminated?
The heparin was produced for the Japanese firms by Scientific Protein Laboratories, the same company that provided the now-recalled heparin sold in the U.S. by Baxter International Inc.
Scientific Protein was forced to close down its plant in China over possible contamination issues. The FDA said that a foreign substance was found in the heparin recalled by Baxter, and it may have originated during production in China.
Life-Threatening Allergic Reactions
In the U.S., the recalled heparin has been linked to hundreds of potentially fatal allergic reactions and at least four deaths. Allergic reactions to China-sourced heparin have also been reported in Germany.
No reports of adverse effects reported by heparin patients in Japan.
