"1,800 Reports of Fraud Related to the Hannaford Bros. Breach"

A lawsuit has been filed against an Albany supermarket chain over a data security breach that exposed over 4 million credit and debit card users. The lawsuit is seeking class action status.

Three Month Breach

Hannaford Bros. Co. said it has received about 1,800 reports of fraud related to the breach, which occurred from December 7 to March 10. The company waited until March 17 th to publicize the breach, though it had known of it since February 27.

Lawsuit

The lawsuit referred to the delay as “negligent, fraudulent, reckless and wrongful,” and is seeking reimbursement for shoppers affected by the data theft. The lawsuit also asks that Hannaford be required to pay for continued financial monitoring for potential victims.

Report Fraud

In the meantime, the New York Consumer Protection Board has suggested that consumers who monitor their financial accounts for possible fraud and file a report immediately if fraud is suspected.
