National Guard Troops Sue Government
January 12, 2006
Members of the US National Guard have filed a $73 million class action lawsuit against Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other high-ranking military officials.
The lawsuit seeks damages done to any member of the National Guard in Massachusetts who are allegedly owed money for meals, gasoline, housing, and other daily allowances that the government has withheld from them. The lawsuit also names MA Governor Mitt Romney who is allegedly part of a conspiracy to withhold money from National Guard Troops since the 9/11 terrorist-attacks in New York. If anything, the suit alleges a gross breach of contract law, especially on the contract that the civilians signed with the US government upon enlisting.
Four members of the Massachusetts National Guard filed a $73 million class-action lawsuit on Wednesday against Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other military officials in a dispute over on-the-job expenses since the September 11 attacks.
Officials from the National Guard did not comment on the case.
Meanwhile, thousands and thousands of soldiers who serve in the Guard were mobilized following the attacks of 9/11 to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan, and also to protect several institutions around the country.
National Guard troops told stories of paying for their own transportation, food, gasoline, and housing while performing their duties for the government. Massachusetts National Guard troops were told that they must perform the same tasks as soldiers around the country, but were not allowed the same allowances that other soldiers were.
Overall there are thousands of soldiers named in the suit, which alleges that not only are the soldiers owed money, but that their requests through usual channels were either ignored or outright rejected.
