Half of all Americans that are currently 65 years or older will be admitted to a nursing home at least once. With the largest population of Americans being baby boomers, the number of nursing home occupants is only expected to increase. Of the nation''s 17,000 nursing homes, about 30 percent have been sanctioned for deficiencies that put residents at risk for harm.
One in 20 nursing home residents suffer from nursing home abuse, a number believed to be a gross underestimate of the actual problem. Currently, about a dozen state legislatures are considering the use of "granny cams" to monitor the care of residents in nursing homes. Already, New Mexico and Texas allowed the use of Web or video cameras into nursing home rooms. Under the laws, the resident must alert the nursing home operators beforehand that the camera will be installed and its location. The failure to notify the operator or disguising it so that its presence is not obvious is considered illegal.
The presence of the cameras is intended to hopefully eliminate instances of nursing home abuse and document any insufficient care. Some proponents of the "granny cams" think the cameras should be mandated for all nursing home facilities in order to effectively protect all nursing home residents from instances of nursing home abuse.
