"Antipsychotic Geodon Linked to Diabetes"
In response to a 2003 Food and Drug Administration request that drug manufacturers revise warnings on antipsychotic medications, Pfizer Inc. released a statement alerting physicians to reports that Geodon has been linked to extremely high blood sugar and diabetes.
On August 23, the FDA approved Geodon, an antipsychotic drug used to treat schizophrenia, for the treatment of bipolar mania. One of the six most widely used antipsychotic prescriptions, Geodon is part of a group of medications that has previously been associated with blood sugar-related side effects - some severe enough to induce coma or death. The new warning to doctors states that there have been a few reports of hyperglycemia or diabetes in patients prescribed Geodon.
