A student from Stuyvesant High School and her family recently filed a $300 million suit against Ford Motor Company.
The suit was filed after the girl suffered severe spinal cord injuries in a van crash on the way back from a track meet at Dartmouth.
Valerie Piro, 17, became paralyzed from the neck down after the Ford van she was traveling in flipped over.
Even though Piro was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident, she was still ejected from the van.
The suit also names Piro’s coach who was driving the van for being negligent.
According to Piro’s attorneys, the 13-passenger Ford van was dangerous and lacked side air bags, which may have prevented Valerie from being ejected.
They also accuse the car rental company Avis of being partially to blame saying they should not have rented out the car knowing of its potential dangers.
Valerie is now living at a convalescing home after she spent months at the Rusk Institute for Rehabilitation.
“Some days I feel great and other days I feel like, this sucks so much,” says Valerie.
